Top 5 reads of 2020

Hey gems,

A lot of you have been asking for books recommendations and I know I haven't given you any recently, honestly this is because I haven't had much time to read. I really need to start working it into a routine but it’s so hard some days I just go right to bed. I caught up on some reading over the holiday break which is when I got the idea to go over some of my favourite books of 2020 in a blog!

She's with me (series)

Okay guys, I'm going to cut to the chase because this was the BEST book I read in 2020. It was also the most recent series I read but I really can’t say enough about how this book really was unpredictable and had so many unexpected twists and turns. Yes, it has the expected romance and friendships of a YA novel but it also had a lot of mystery and action in it. School rivalries that are next level and fights breaking out every second chapter. LOVED it. As soon as I finished the first book I ordered the sequel and now found out that the third novel will be out soon thank goodness!

The Program (6 book series)

*Trigger warning: this book discusses in depth the topic of suicide, the effects of suicide on family and friends, etc. If this is a difficult topic for you please skip*

This book series really brings you to your own lowest lows. I cried, screamed, laughed and felt so engaged with the story that it felt beyond real. This is a longer, 6 book series that has 3 duet stories. Each 2 book duet follows a different set of characters who all finally reunite at the end of the last novel and although it is a long road, it is so worth it. What I love about this series is that it dives into uncomfortable scenarios that, like Divergent or Hunger Games, are completely fictional but also not so far off from reality that they are easily imagined. The society is dealing with a suicide pandemic and follows the main character through navigating loss, depression, the system, etc. I give an emotional warning though because you will feel all the feels with this one.

On the Fence

Okay so completely different from The Program, On the fence is a YA romance that yes, tackles some different storylines but generally is true to a romance and lets us fall for these teens as they figure out their feelings for each other while surrounded by brothers and friends. This really is a cute, mental break read that is just a feel good story.

Second Chance Summer

Okay so I had actually already read this book but completely didn't remember the storyline so I picked it up again and gave it another shot! I am not disappointed. Yes... I cried AGAIN. This story follows a family, mainly a young girl as they are navigating love and loss in a small timeframe and trying to et through one last summer as a family unit. I can't say it isn't a romance because you guys know I love a good love story but this one isn't as straight forward, nor as dominant in the storyline. IT reminded me a lot of Sarah Dessen's Saint Anything, how the love story was there but there were also so many other things going on.

Fallen Star (Series)

Okay if you guys haven't discovered ibooks yet, please go download the app right now and search this series. The books are free and available to all apple devices. I read the first 4 and I believe the series continues but those continuations are paid. Essentially the 4th free book ties things up in a neat bow so you can either chose to keep reading or stop there. This series is really a YA fiction all about guarding a fallen star and forbidden love. A young girl was completely removed from this fantasy world in order to protect her and as her memories and emotions flood back she discovers not only a whole other world but her real past and secrets that have been kept from her for years. Such a good story, a beautiful love story and especially, a great fiction that pulls you into its world!
