Who's ready for a little romance? I have loved Sarah Dessen's work for years now, she is a true artist at creating a story her readers can dive into and believe all the way. This story brings in that romance that Dessen is known for but also so much more. A difficult family dynamic, a creepy guy lurking around and a friendship we can all relate to. Oh and lots of pizza too!
Not only does Saint Anything show a beautiful story of personal growth where Sydney, the main character, finds her balance in the most tumultuous of times, but also strength she didn't know she had. This book is one for all those who need a reminder that they are so much more then their situation.
The book starts off by throwing it's readers into a court room without much context, that's where we are introduced to some of our characters including Sydney and her family. This is where we start; devastation. Honestly, this gets you emotionally involved right away. The great thing about this book is that even if you don't relate to having a family member in prison, or a change of schools, or a tough family dynamic, or new friendships, or love, or.... well I'm pretty sure anyone can relate to something in that list!
Sydney is used to being invisible, but at her new school, maybe she doesn't have to be. Maybe she can choose. This is a whole new start with new people and somehow, through everything going on in her life, she becomes stronger than ever. Her independence, her confidence, her strength, it's all on the rise! Then again, this is mostly because she has no choice considering the way her parents obsess over her brother and therefore barely acknowledge her.
I don't want to spoil everything for you, but:
1. I love Mac's character! He isn't the hero saving Sydney from anything. He and his family are a safe place for her, but she does all her own saving, which is one of my favorite things about this book. The romance is there but it isn't the whole story.

2. The different points of view displayed in the book are remarkable. There's Sydney, her mother and her brother, then Layla, Mac and their family. The ways that a situation can be discussed and shown is amazing in this book.
3. Keep a close eye on Ames people, he is CREEPY MCGEE!!!
Honestly, I've read all of Sarah Dessen's novels, and most of them multiple times, this is by far my favorite. Not only is it more complex then a simple love story, but it's a real grown up, truth-telling, and dynamic story that leaves readers having no clue where it will lead next.
